Reflective Journal: Nurturing Well-Being Through Acts of Kindness

As we go through various phases of life, we realise that the well-being of love often comes from the relationships we build and the kindness we extend to others. The more we grow, the more we realize that happiness is not just about personal success but also about giving space to others to be happy. This thought is very closely related to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Therefore, this awareness became clearer to me when I participated in a welfare program to care for orphans at Rumah Penyayang Darul Ilmi, Gombak, Selangor. Even though this experience has been over 2 years, it is still fresh in my memory.

On February 19, 2023, a community program was run under the title Community Cares with Darul Ilmi Clan, organized by the Naqibah ProTahfiz Sekolah Agama Menengah Rawang. As the program director, I prepared the proposal 2 months earlier to get the approval from high management.

While waiting for official approval, I hoped this program would be approved to instill the value of love for the children and the spirit of team cooperation as a reflection of SDG 3 to promote mental health and well-being for all. After a few weeks, this program was approved. Therefore, our team continued to plan on how to make the activities more meaningful for them and not just entertainment. Some of the challenges we may face are related to time management and a psychological approach to understanding the audience's feelings. After several meetings were held, we moved to make initial preparations.

On the program day, upon arrival at Rumah Penyayang Darul Ilmi, the children at this care center welcomed us very well, they hugged and thanked us for coming to accompany them even for a moment. Therefore, we saw that the children were very friendly and active. This is where SDG 3 was clearly related in providing a safe space for them. Therefore, we continued with fun and spiritual activities like aerobics, coloring, and water splash. We also carried out a quiz activity related to the prophet Muhammad SAW to inspire them with positive values and faith.

After the activity was over, some children began to express their hidden stories with me, this is showing that the program had achieved its goal. Without realizing it, the program had come to an end, and we were satisfied to see that this program not only benefited the participants but also ourselves.  After the closing ceremony, the care center management appreciated our services, and they were proud to see that we could do the program and control the participants very well even though we were still in our teens. Therefore, we felt grateful because we managed to run a program that was not just a social activity but a contributor to SDG 3. The biggest reflection for me was realizing that love and attention are effective "medicine" for personal well-being. Finally, the main lesson of this program is that true happiness comes when we help others achieve well-being in their lives.

Thank you, Rumah Penyayang Darul Ilmi. ❤️
